coming Soon

We’re delighted to announce that the new LP from James Summerfield, ‘Analogue Tales: Sounds from Arden’, will be released on Commercially Inviable on June 22nd.

The record is a celebration of the city of Birmingham, created in collaboration with poet Darren Cannan. It covers ground familiar to most residents of the city, with the Jewellery Quarter, Longbridge Rover car plant, the M42, Ladywood, Birmingham city centre and Sutton Coldfield featuring in the allegories, observations, asides and stories that make up the album, all set within James’s striking yet elegant take on Americana.

The extraordinary pictures of the region’s people, landscapes and identity has further detail added by the voices of guest narrators The Beat frontman Ranking Roger, broadcaster Robin Valk, James Summerfield’s grandmother Marjorie Summerfield, authors Mike Gayle and Catherine O’Flynn, and songwriter and actor Paul Murphy.

At only 33, James already has a great catalogue of work under his belt, much of proudly released by us. A favourite of legendary broadcaster and disc jockey the late John Peel, James played with Buick 6 (later The Toques) throughout the mid-2000s before self-recording his acclaimed debut solo album ‘Hailah, Hailah’ aged 21. Since then, he has gone on to produce a further three solo albums and tour with Ivor Novello award-winning artist Scott Matthews.

Recorded in the intimate surroundings of Birmingham’s 100% analogue Highbury Studio, and featuring a band comprising of Commercially Inviable label mates, with contributions from World of Fox and Friends of the Stars, Analogue Tales: Sounds From Arden is James’s best work he’s to date. He says, “I’d never previously wanted to do a concept album, but the opportunity to use Darren’s intriguingly crafted poems with themes emulating my own social and cultural background works – it’s a concept which feels of importance.”

The album will be available on 22nd June worldwide through digital retailers and streaming sites. It is also available as a limited edition CD that comes with a book of the Darren Cannan poems featured in James’ songs. A super-limted vinyl version is available, with only 25 copies being pressed.

You can pre-order your digital, CD or vinyl copy from the Commercially Inviable shop.

In the meantime, here is a track from the LP, featuring Caroline O’Flynn on vocal duties:
